Important – supervision of children/young people at our activities

Teen group is a ‘drop and go’ session. At the teen group, ASD Helping Hands supervise the teens.

At ALL other activities parents/carers must stay with their children.

We expect children/young people to be fully supervised by their parents/carers at all times. NAS WN has no supervisory staff

The social nature of the gym helps children to form bonds with other children; yet the equipment is all individual so there is no pressure of the ‘team sport’. Who doesn’t love to bounce on the trampoline!

TEEN GROUP
At Gaywood Scout Hut, King’s Lynn
7pm – 9pm
Every other Monday evening

NAS WN approached the Norfolk based charity ASD Helping Hands to start a regular teen club, for teens with ASD, in King’s Lynn.

The some of the benefits of the group are:
  • Confidence and self-esteem building, by allowing group members to join in with planning and assisting in the making of key decisions. We aim to work towards making each member feel they are a valued part of the group, aiding and developing team work and personal growth.
  • Building on and encouraging social and communication skills through group activities, tailored programmes and trips out.
  • Establishing a level of independence, enabling a smoother transition into adulthood through group involvement and participation. We aim to encourage group members to make their own decisions and take responsibility for themselves and others around them.
  • The group will provide a safe and friendly non-judgemental environment in which personal development will be encouraged in a supportive manner.

NAS WN approached the Norwich based charity Musical Keys to start a regular music based youth club, where children with ASD could create and improvise with music on iPads.

Initially the children learnt about composition, based around the iPad apps GarageBand and Thumb Jam. Over the weeks they moved onto improvisation, music theory and eventually creating music to a moving image!

This was so successful that NAS WN asked Musical Keys to expand and run 2 groups for us, to cover different age groups (see above).

As well as being a fun and constructive session Musical Keys have created a programme where skills such as sharing and working in groups are developed, together with creative thinking and decision making. Using rhythm and composition exercises practical skills such as concentration and coordination are also worked on.

NAS West Norfolk Branch hires the hall at Lynnsport during the school holidays for roller skating. Our roller skating sessions are for anyone aged 5 years old and over, including siblings.

This is a relaxed session with parents staying and joining in the fun (on skates if they want to!) It is very popular and a great social opportunity.

The social nature of roller skating helps children to form bonds with other children; but there is no pressure on being able to skate. Children can just come to watch, skate with support or progress on to skating independently. Don’t forget this is an activity for children on the spectrum and their siblings; it is also a great place to meet other families and relax in a sympathetic atmosphere.

SWIMMING FUN SESSIONS
Downham Market Leisure Centre

NAS West Norfolk Branch hires the Downham Market swimming pool for the private use of our members about 10 times per year.

The focus is completely on having fun and the pool is equipped with all different sized floats for families to use, including the really large ones to lie on. We guarantee that the pool will never be packed as numbers are restricted to a maximum of 29 people (adults and children including siblings).

Did you know:
Sensory Experience. Water provides 30x more deep pressure to the body than air and it is uniquely a full contact input to the body. Many children who become adept at swimming underwater will find it a very calming and organizing place to be.
Gross Motor Skills. The gravity-lessened environment of water can help children explore and practice movements and skills they are not yet able to perform on land. Children who have difficulty standing on one leg, jumping, or hopping on land can do so in the water.

All members and their families are welcome (£1 per person). If your child is not sure about going in the pool you are also welcome to just come and watch free of charge.

This is a play session with parents staying and joining in the fun! It is very popular and a great social opportunity. Siblings are welcome.

The social nature of the play barn helps children to form bonds with other children. Bursting with family fun, making us a great venue for your family come rain or shine.
